Designing a Garden-Inspired Terrazza for Del Mar

Updated: 3 days ago

When Del Mar approached us about a permanent floral installation for their terrazza (terrace), the brief was clear: the space already had character. Bold color. Strong architectural details. A sense of place that didn’t need to be reinvented.
Our role wasn’t to overpower the terrazza — it was to enhance it.
Del Mar’s terrazza is a central part of the dining experience, and any design intervention needed to feel intentional, layered, and timeless rather than decorative for decoration’s sake.

Designing for a Space with a Point of View

One of the most interesting challenges of this project was restraint.
The terrazza already featured saturated tones and architectural texture, which meant florals had to work with the space, not compete against it. Instead of introducing bold new colors, we focused on structure and movement — letting form do the work.
We anchored the design around trellises, using them as a framework rather than a focal point. From there, we layered in climbing florals and vines, creating a garden-like rhythm that felt organic and immersive without overwhelming the existing palette.
The result was a terrazza that felt softened and elevated — as though the space had slowly grown into itself.

A Permanent Installation That Feels Alive

Although this was a permanent installation, we wanted it to feel dynamic rather than fixed.
We combined real branches with permanent greenery and florals, carefully selecting materials that would hold up over time while still offering depth, variation, and softness. The climbing elements were designed to guide the eye through the terrazza, reinforcing the feeling of dining within a garden rather than beneath a decorative feature.
Every placement decision was made in direct response to the architecture of the space.

Enhancing, Not Overpowering

Rather than treating florals as a statement moment, the installation was designed to work quietly in the background — enhancing the terrazza without overwhelming it.
The finished space feels layered and intentional, creating a more immersive dining experience while preserving the personality Del Mar is known for.
